 In most provinces - except for Alberta, you have the option of paying for a minimum of 30 hours per week to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

INCOME TAX WRITE OFFS:

You can write off a caregiver as you would daycare costs. The amounts paid is deducted from the parent or guardian with the lowest taxable income. The amount Canada Revenue Agency allows is:

  • A maximum of $7,000.00, per year, for each child who is under 7 years of age.
  • A maximum of $4,000.00 per year, for each child who is 7 years to 16 years of age. 
  • A maximum of $10,000.00 per year for each child with an eligible disability

CPP, EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, AND WCB:

If you hire a live-in caregiver, you are now considered an employer, and are subject to taking deductions as well as contributing to CPP, Employment Insurance, and WCB.
